  1. 1892-1934. Austrian Christian Socialist
  2. politician. He was appointed chancellor in
  3. 1932, and in 1933 suppressed parliament and
  4. ruled by decree. In Feb 1934 he crushed the
  5. Social Democrats by force, and in May Austria
  6. was declared a `corporative' state. The Nazis
  7. attempted a coup d'etat on 25 July; the
  8. Chancellery was seized and Dollfuss murdered.
